This section distinguishes between Operator Interfaces and Field Interfaces to the BAS. The Operator Interface refers to the main 'front-end' method for accessing and operating the BAS. The Field Interfaces typically access the BAS from the controller-level and have limited functionality, and may include HID, LDP, and ZBI as described below. This section describes the devices only; OI functionality is generally covered in the Software, while Field Interface functionality is detailed further in the individual Controllers
Operator Interfaces (OI)
Dedicated Operator Workstation (OWS)
Dedicated PC(s) with proprietary workstation software
PC with Aspect FT Studio software serves as configuration interface for programming controllers. Aspect FT Enterprise, Aspect FT Facility, or Aspect FT Nexus allows integration with popular internet programs and allows remote PCs, tablets, and smart phones to access the BAS.
"Thin" Client Browser Internet Explorer 7.0 (or later), Mozilla Firefox 3.0 (or later), Safari 3.2 (or later), or Google Chrome 1.0 (or later). Requires Aspect FT Enterprise or Facility (web servers) and Aspect FT Studio software running on a PC on the IT Network.
"Thick" Client Browser
Product Application(s): N.A.
Handheld Interface Devices (HID)
PDA-Based Yes - internet enabled smart phones
Proprietary Yes - SoloTool
Local Display Panel (LDP) Optional: The SBC-SD, NB-SD, FHC-SD, and BBC-SD are small wall mounted touch screen displays and can be used as local operator interfaces.
Zone Based Interfaces (ZBI)
Thermostat with communication port to access local controller/network The SoloStat has an RJ-11 jack for SoloTool interface. The SBC-STAT has an optional RJ-11 jack for laptop computer or a hand-held interface device. This connection provides communication from the attached device to the controller bus
Other thermostat types available (without communication ports)
Interface to BAS Networks IP interface is achived via Aspect FT - Enterprise, Aspect FT - Facility, or Aspect FT- Nexus(web servers) and Aspect FT - Studio software running on a PC that is connected to the IT Network. IP interface can also be achieved through a BACnet/IP interface/port at the Aspect FT Matrix Area controller or SAGEMAX supervisory interface.
Compatible with the building's IT network? Yes. See 'Internet / IT Network' above.
Protocol(s) Public Host Protocol (PHP) to SageMax Legacy controllers and to Integra supervisory interfaces. BACnet MS/TP to NB-Series controllers.
Cabling and Speeds STP, fiber, telephone line, or RF modem for PHP @ up to 38.4 kbps EIA-485 for BACnet MS/TP @ up to 76.8 kbps. Ethernet @ 10 Mbps (optional).
Expansion Capability Unlimited number of SAGEMAX units can be on primary PHP network.
Additional Information
Peer-to-Peer or Polling? Polling
Protocol(s) Public Unitary Protocol (PUP) and BACnet MS/TP
Cabling and Speeds UTP EIA-485 @ up to 115.2 kbps for PUP
Expansion Capability SAGEMAX LAN capacity: 64 or 128 secondary network controllers per LAN with a maximum of 4 LANs for up to 512 controllers per SAGEMAX. Each LAN connecting to the SAGEMAX can be either PUP or BACnet MS/TP. Aspect FT Matrix Controllers: up to 128 secondary controllers depending on model. Aspect FT Nexus Controllers: up to 256 secondary controllers depending on model.
Additional Information
Includes a listing of available Gateways, Routers and other devices that provide additional communications flexibility into and out of the BAS. Repeaters, bridges, standard modems and the like are typically not included here. Note: If in use by the BAS, the Internet/building IT Network is extremely open and non-proprietary. If a vendor uses the IT Network, CI devices such as IP routers and hubs can be purchased from third parties.
